<image:title>Detroit - Indus Detroit - Detroit</image:title>
<image:caption>Indus Detroit June 21 - July 31, 2019 The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely, and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically by all of the region’s inhabitants and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It requires Muslims to organize and speak, as believers, citizens, and artists. Detroit began to take shape as a Halal Metropolis over a century ago when the first Muslim communities moved to the area for work in the booming auto industry. They opened their first mosque in Highland Park in 1921, established the Nation of Islam in 1930, and organized the state’s oldest mosque, the American Moslem Society in Dearborn in 1938. Today there are over 90 mosques in the tri-county area representing communities with roots in the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the American South. Metro Detroit has also been home to two of the nation’s first Muslim representatives in the United States Congress, the first Muslim American judge, the first Muslim American mayor, the first Muslim majority city council, and the first Muslim majority city. Mosques and Muslim political leaders have long attracted attention to Detroit’s Muslim communities as have the region’s entrepreneurs and artists, service providers, athletes and engineers. Somehow Muslim visibility is both pronounced and extremely present in the city, while never becoming an integral part of the larger narrative of the region. In this first iteration of the multi-part Halal Metropolis series, we focus on the past, on the experiences of African American Muslims, and on the work of Muslim artists in order to consider what is it that makes, and has made, Detroit’s Muslims so very visible over the last century. When and why are Detroit’s Muslims visible? To whom? At what cost? What are the threads that link current and past representations of Muslim Detroiters into one narrative? Participating Artists: Amna Asghar Qais Assali Kecia Escoe Anthony Giannini Parisa Ghaderi & Ebrahim Soltani Razi Jafri Leah Vernon Special Thanks: Laila Abbas and family, Shedrick El-Amin, Adil Akhtar, Dream of Detroit, and The Muslim Center</image:caption>

<image:title>Dearborn - Dearborn</image:title>
<image:caption>Stamelos Gallery University of Michigan - Dearborn January 17 - April 3, 2020 The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely, and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It encourages Muslims to organize and speak as believers, citizens, and artists. Nowhere is this halal metropolis more prominent than in Dearborn, where halal restaurants and the hijab are ubiquitous and the state’s oldest and largest mosques are located. Arab and Turkish Muslims began working at Ford’s Rouge factory and moving to Dearborn before the city was incorporated in 1929. A small minority at the time, they opened their first mosques in its shadow in the 1930s. When US immigration laws changed in the 1960s, these mosques welcomed new arrivals from the Middle East and South Asia and inspired them to build their own mosques across the metro area. Today there are 11 mosques in Dearborn and 96 in the tri-county area. Yet the halal metropolis has its greatest impact outside these mosques. This was first seen in the coffee houses and groceries that provided Dearborn’s Arab immigrants with a taste of home. The first halal butcher opened in Dearborn in the 1950s, and the culinary scene has never looked back. No longer limited to Lebanese restaurants and bakeries, the halal scene in Dearborn now includes Iraqi, Yemeni, and Syrian cuisine, and highly innovative bistros, patisseries, burger joints and hotdog stands. The hijab did not become common in Dearborn until the 1980s, but today it is worn by police officers, school superintendents, high school athletes and judges alike. Neighborhood hijab shops now compete with national chains, and local designers are at the fore of the global Islamic fashion industry. Many non-hijabis also signal their faith with tattoos, car decals, jewelry, architectural design, and the full range of aesthetic practices. With so many Muslim communities sharing space in Dearborn the desire to stand out – or to blend in – is intense. Yet while Dearborn’s Arab community has long been the most visible Muslim population in the US, it has struggled to achieve effective political representation. Only recently has the city sent an Arab American to the state legislature, or seen an Arab majority City Council. The community is better represented in appointed positions than elected ones. Yemeni and Iraqi voters are also eager for the Lebanese establishment to share its limited power. Islamic holidays also make Dearborn distinctive. The flags and parades of Ashura are difficult to miss in some neighborhoods, as are the twinkling lights of Ramadan when night and day switch places for a month and piety and consumerism compete with one another for the true meaning of the season. What could be more American than this? In this fourth iteration of the Halal Metropolis series, we focus on Dearborn to consider what makes, and has made, Detroit’s Muslims so very visible over the last century. When and why are Detroit’s Muslims visible? To whom? At what cost? How do artists help shape this narrative? How do you? <image:title>Hamtramck - Hamtramck</image:title>
<image:caption>Bank Suey August 30 - September 28, 2019 The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely, and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically by all of the region’s inhabitants and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It encourages Muslims to organize and speak as believers, citizens, and artists. Greater Hamtramck began to attract Muslims in the 1960s, mostly Indian and Pakistani graduate students at Wayne State University and their families, but the pace really picked up in the wake of the destruction of Dodge Main and Poletown. A small congregation of Yemeni autoworkers whose mosque and homes were displaced by the wrecking balls purchased a Polish American funeral home just south of Hamtramck in 1984 and began to re-establish themselves in the area. Today Masjid Mu`ath Bin Jabal is one of the largest and most dynamic mosques in the region. Bosnian refugees joined this mix in 1999 when they were invited to relocate to the city by then Mayor Gary Zych to help stave off white flight. They were followed by a migration of Bengali Americans who had previously settled in Queens, New York. As the Polish and Ukranian populations moved elsewhere, Muslim immigrants were attracted by the city’s small, walkable scale, by its affordable real estate, and by the growing visibility of one another. The first municipality in the country to have a Muslim majority population and a Muslim majority City Council, Hamtramck has attracted global attention. The hyper visibility of its many mosques, halal businesses, and distinctive cultural practices make it a frequent backdrop for the dystopian fears of anti-Muslim activists and the dreamy optimism of multiculturalists alike. As we hope to show in this exhibition, the reality lies somewhere in between these extremes. In this second iteration of the multi-part Halal Metropolis series, we focus on the history of Hamtramck’s Muslim communities, on the city’s political struggles, and on the Muslim body in order to consider what is it that makes, and has made, Detroit’s Muslims so very visible over the last century. When and why are Detroit’s Muslims visible? To whom? At what cost? How do artists help shape this narrative and what is the future of halal in Hamtramck? <image:caption>Arthur Secunda Museum Cleary University November 8 - December 20, 2019 The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely, and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It encourages Muslims to organize and speak as believers, citizens, and artists. In contrast to the hyper-visible communities of Dearborn and Hamtramck, the Muslims of Livingston County live in relative obscurity. Halal restaurants and grocers in Brighton and Fenton suggest the presence of Muslim consumers in both the center and periphery of the county. Medical facilities in Brighton and engineering centers, like the GM Milford Proving Grounds, also hint that Muslim professionals reside nearby. Mosques in neighboring East Lansing, Flint, and Ann Arbor, have long welcomed Livingston residents, and the community of the Naqshbandi Spiritual Retreat Center, which opened on a small farm just south of Fenton in 1991, is growing and investing in homes nearby. Frequently, Muslim communities in suburban and exurban settings become visible only when their plans to build mosques, establish summer camps, or develop graveyards, are met with opposition. This was true in Canton, Troy, and Sterling Heights, just as it was here in Livingston County. Resistance to the Naqshbandi Center quickly melted away when their lodge and mosque finally opened and they were able to get to know their neighbors. Many of the county’s Muslim residents were born to non-Muslim parents. Their love of the outdoors, of fishing, hunting, riding, and cross-country skiing, did not dissipate when they donned the hijab or began praying five times a day. Those who moved here to be near work, near a spiritual retreat, or far from the noise and expense of the city, also continue to pursue their individual passions, often for the same American pastimes as their neighbors. Given Livingston County’s profile as a mostly rural, exurban space, can we think of it as part of the Halal Metropolis at all? In this installation, we connect the visibility of the Muslim body and of Muslim institutions in greater Detroit to that of Muslims living and worshipping in more rural areas. Is this the future of Islam in Michigan? <image:title>Detroit - Scarab Club - Detroit</image:title>
<image:caption>Scarab Club July 28 - August 28, 2021 Halal Metropolis explores the facts, fictions, and imaginaries of the Muslim population(s) in Detroit and Southeast Michigan as viewed through historical research, documentation of current conditions, and explorations of future desires. The Halal Metropolis alludes to the established and growing Muslim population in Detroit and its metro area, one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the U.S., whose visibility is both pronounced and extremely present in the city, yet whose narrative seems unusually silent in the larger Detroit story. Detroit began to take shape as a halal metropolis over a century ago when the first Muslim communities moved to the area for work in the booming auto industry. While Dearborn and Hamtramck are the most vibrant Muslim enclaves in the region today, there are over 100 mosques in the tri-county area representing communities with roots in the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the American South. The Halal Metropolis is one where Muslims practice their faith freely and contribute to society with all of their talents and commitments. It is created dialogically and requires Muslims to be visible to one another and to non-Muslims. It encourages Muslims to organize and speak as believers, citizens, and artists. Muslim artists reflect on how the region and their identities interact and shape their concerns and aesthetics. The exhibition blends archival materials, social and political artifacts, photography, and art to explore the congruent and contradicting ideas, aesthetics, and cultures working to make the halal metropolis both a real and imaginary entity.
